The Worthiness of God

Psalm 67

Today’s world and the world of ancient Israel’s existence differed radically.  In that world many deities were territorial.  Many of the gods and goddesses were dominant in “their” area of predominant influence.  For the most part, it was quite acceptable to honor the god or goddess of the territory without denouncing one’s god or goddess of personal preference.  To acknowledge the existence and activity of multiple gods was appropriate—just take care not to offend the dominant god or goddess of the region!

Usually these ancient gods and goddesses were not in competition.  People were to acknowledge and honor them, but most gods and goddesses were not offended by human acknowledgement of other deities.  It was not uncommon for a god or goddess to be acknowledged as proficient in a particular area of human need.  Thus honoring multiple gods or goddesses was considered humanly wise.

The concept of only one deity’s existence was strange!

This psalm acknowledges the existence of a single deity.  This deity is merciful and happy to respond to human need.  People are not a tolerated annoyance!

In this psalm there is a continuing emphasis on God being the God of the world, not merely the God of Israel.  He governs people with justice, not merely by power.  The world can sense the difference in the manner this God looks at and deals with people.  People with their human needs are not a tolerated inconvenience!  The fact that this just God guides people is reason for human joy!

This world God is worthy of all humans’ praise!  He also is worthy of world recognition!
